Young Sammamish residents created five sculptures for the SAMMI Awards Sculpture contest. Artists had to create their works out of at least 50 percent reclaimed, recycled or found materials from around the city. All five are on display at City Hall until March 13 and will be moved to be displayed at Eastlake High School during the SAMMI Awards on March 14.
With the SAMMI Awards around the corner, the event’s board of directors recently announced a brand new distinction to be presented at the awards ceremony March 14 at Eastlake High School.
The new honor is the Founders Award, and the first ever recipient is Kristin Pitt. The directors chose her themselves because she “truly epitomizes the term, ‘being of service,’” according to a statement from the board.
Pitt has worked behind the scenes to make the community safer and stronger without expectation of praise, the statement said.
Pitt has served as president of various elementary, junior high and high school PTSAs and currently serves on the board of directors at the Boys & Girls Club, according to the statement, and has worked to raise money for the new Sammamish Teen Center. At Samantha Smith Elementary, Pitt headed the emergency preparedness team.
She also raises dogs.
In the statement, the board of directors said it “appreciates Kristin’s quiet tenacity and commitment to community service.”
Sculptures on display
Sammamish residents and students created five sculptures for the SAMMI Awards Sculpture contest.
Renaissance School of Art and Reasoning students Devon Ashley and Brooke LeFevre constructed a tree out of green aluminum cans, and Andrew Firestone and Anna Crossley crafted an L-shaped wall of soda cans, said Contest Director Connie Walsworth.
Sammamish residents Lesley and Matt Johnson submitted a glass sculpture and the Walsworth family made two different glass art pieces.
Artists had to create their works out of at least 50 percent reclaimed, recycled or found materials from around the city. All five are on display at City Hall until March 13 and will be moved to be displayed at Eastlake High School during the SAMMI Awards on March 14.
