Sammamish has one parade a year and its future appears in limbo. City officials say they don’t want to cancel the event, but they haven’t offered any tenable solutions, according to the parade’s organizer.

Ami Maners, Associated Student Body adviser at Skyline High School, said she’s received mixed messages from the city. The Public Works Department advised her in October that the 2009 parade could not be on 228th Avenue during peak traffic hours on a Friday afternoon. But no other situation seems plausible, Maners said.

Only 228th Avenue has enough lanes that several can be closed down without shutting down the entire road, Maners said.

The alternative would be Southeast 8th Street, which doesn’t seem like a good fit for the event, Maners said. Read more

Police arrested an Eastside bank robber Feb. 23 with the help of Sammamish bank employees.

A 28-year-old Kirkland man stole an undisclosed amount of money from the Bank of America in the Sammamish Highlands shopping center at about 12:50 p.m. Feb. 23, according to police.

Investiga-tors believe the same man committed bank robberies in Issaquah and Kirkland earlier this month.

“He had done all three in pretty quick succession and probably would have done another one if we hadn’t caught him,” said Robbie Burroughs, spokesperson for the FBI’s Seattle office. Read more

Nothing is set in stone, but an electronic reader board at Eastlake High School — or anywhere else in Sammamish — seems unlikely after the Planning Commission’s Feb. 19 meeting.

Reader boards weren’t on the agenda for the meeting, but they came up during a general discussion about what kind of signs should be permitted or encouraged in the new Town Center.

Michael Matthias, the Town Center project manager and city planner, cautioned against reading too much into the discussion. The signage policy discussion did not conclude and the commission did not take any action at the meeting, he pointed out. Read more

The annexation of Camden Park and its surrounding neighborhoods could become a reality as early as April. A King County Boundary Review Board gave its tentative approval to the annexation at a Feb. 19 meeting.

The area in question is an L-shaped set of parcels bordered on the west by 244th Avenue Northeast, on the south by Northeast 20th Street, and on the north and west by Redmond-Fall City Road.

If approved, the addition would bring 113 acres, 347 new residents and between $7,221-$11,231 annually in added revenue into Sammamish.

The Boundary Review Board voted 11-0 in favor of the annexation, but will make the decision final March 12, according to Sammamish’s Community Development Director Kamuron Gurol. Read more

Cities have parades

There are few things as iconic a part of small-town America as the homecoming parade down Main Street. That is why we are troubled that city officials are considering forbidding Skyline High School’s annual parade on 228th Avenue – Sammamish’s main street. Read more

The city held two more public meetings regarding a $5.4 million new operations and maintenance building on 244th

Avenue. Two residents appeared at the Feb. 19 meeting and one came to the Feb. 26 meeting, according to Project Manager Sevda Baran.

Their concerns regarded noise pollution from the new building and whether the city would cut down too many trees during construction, Baran said.

An artist’s rendering of the new facility showed the way the building would blend in with the area’s natural surroundings, with trees sprinkled around and even some green roofing. Read more
