Cascade Ridge Elementary fourth grader Noah Springborn isn’t thrilled about having to wear a bright-green tie-die apron in front of the school this week during lunchtime. But he’s willing to do it for a worthy cause.
So is his “Green Team” partner, and fellow fourth-grader, Jack Sansing. He actually kind of likes the custom-made garb, he said.
It’s not worth it, “if you don’t have something that stands out and looks cool,” said teacher Lynette Springborn.
Starting this week, third- and fourth-grade volunteers will be wearing the aprons as they direct their classmates to use the proper recycling bins after lunch. Read more

How do parents know what to get their children for their birthdays at what age? Are there some benchmarks they must meet? Do they abide by a rulebook? Or…gasp…do they look at each child as an individual person and sit down and talk about their goals, feelings, and ambitions before deciding what to get their children? This is what I think all parents should get their children at their respective ages. Yes, some of these are based on prior birthdays of my own. Some are not. You can do the sleuthing yourselves, but in general, I think it’s safe to say that any birthday after the age of 18 is not based on a prior birthday of mine.
First Birthday: Nothing! Babies don’t know that they are one! One what? One baby? One diaper? One…one? What? They can’t even count, and they’re happy to just play with the wrapping paper. Read more

For a seventh grader, Pine Lake Middle School student Robbie Steil has made a lot of pottery. In a year and a half of attending the once-a-week after-school pottery club, he’s missed just two days, he said.
“I just like making stuff,” Steil said. “I like trying new things.”

He has brought home the typical projects, such as a pot, a mug or a vase, that his parents have around the house. But one of his favorites seems to be the combination water-food bowl he made for his black-haired wiener dog Blondie.
He’s been in the club long enough to be able to teach his friends and others simple techniques on the pottery wheel.
“It’s fun to do it with friends — helping them out, them helping you out,” Steil said. Read more
