Council gives homeowners more options when putting additions on their houses

A new set of changes to city law gives some residents more stormwater mitigation options when building an addition to their home.
But some argue that it could also lead to soil erosion, endangering homes and watershed habitat near Sammamish’s lakes.
“As one who’s been trying to save the native Kokanee (salmon) for 10 years, it’s sad for me to see such a blasé attitude from the council,” Ilene Stahl said.
Stahl, the president of the Friends of Pine Lake, is an outspoken opponent of the amendment passed by the City Council Jan. 20.
If improperly implemented, the new amendments could allow droves of new additions, creating slick surface areas that would send water and sediment downhill, said Stahl. Stahl believes this could result in mucking up streams where salmon travel. Read more
School districts start open enrollment

Both the Issaquah and Lake Washington school districts will hold open enrollment in February for parents who want their children to attend a school other than the one in their neighborhood.

Sahalee Country Club forms its own water company and opens for business

American politics and government took on a whole new meaning for 35 Skyline High School students, their government teacher and three chaperones, after experiencing the presidential inauguration first hand Jan. 20.
By some accounts, more than 1.5 million people were estimated to have attended last week’s inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. And many millions more watched the historic moment from home on television. Read more
