Competitive smarts from Inglewood’s academic team

January 12, 2009

Not many schools in Washington offer an after-school academic team with similar characteristics to football and basketball.

But the Lake Washington School District does. In fact it’s the only district in the state that fields teams in the National Academic League, and Inglewood Junior High happens to be one of six participating district schools.

The National Academic League is a competitive trivia organization for junior high and middle school kids to compete using their knowledge.

“It’s great for kids who have an interest in trivia and are smart and want to come do something for an hour or 45 minutes after school,” said team captain Blake Crinklaw. “It caters to a lot of different kinds of people, and there’s a lot of different things for everyone here.” Read more

Before Eastlake High School’s 2008 football season began, home games were a little quieter. Cheerleaders led the crowd to encourage the Wolves on the field, and the band played during timeouts and quarter breaks.

But the games lacked those loud, groovin’ beats that got the crowd pumped up before kickoff. That is until Eastlake student Christian Casolary decided to start the Eastlake drumline as part of his senior project.

“We came out, and after, like, the first base drum hit, everybody jumped like a foot in the air,” bass drummer Alex Chmaj said of the group’s first performance. “And they were totally blown away. They were all stunned. It was awesome.”

The idea started as somewhat of a joke at a summer leadership camp, Casolary said, but quickly turned into a 12-member squad of bass drums, quads (tenor drums), snare drums and cymbals.

Two weeks into the school year, Casolary felt some pressure to get it going. All it took to form the after-school club was a chat with assistant principal Chris Bede and an announcement over the school’s PA system.

“I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, but I guess that little, kind of joke, ‘yeah I’m gonna do it,’ was the start of what actually came to be the Eastlake Drumline,” Casolary said after practice Jan. 7. Read more

Managers at the Sammamish Safeway will have a chance to revel in their store’s recent recognition as the 2008 Sammamish Employer of the Year.

They will receive the award, presented by Life Enrichment Opportunities Jan. 15 at the Sammamish Chamber of Commerce holiday luncheon at Bakes Place at Providence Point.

The event is open to anyone who wants to buy a ticket, said Life Enrichment Opportunities board member Cathy Lamb, and will include the presentation of the first Sammamish Employer of the Year award.

The Issaquah-based organization, which works with developmentally disabled teens to find them employment, housing, transportation and community education, chose Sammamish Safeway for its outstanding work relationship with the special-needs population.

She said it was natural to start awarding Sammamish businesses, due to the organization’s growth in the area.

She thought it “would be good to spread that kind of awareness.”

Safeway was chosen after a month-long nomination process that ended Nov. 15, in which Sammamish businesses, residents and educators nominated area employers based on their hiring practices that helped developmentally disabled teens transition from high school to the workplace.

“We’re honored and obviously very pleased,” said Chris Smith, Safeway assistant manager. Read more

When the glasses were clinking, the ball was dropping, and the confetti was flying, everyone had one thing on his or her mind: New Year’s Resolutions. For me, New Year’s Resolutions are more stressful than studying for finals (though that can be pretty intense) or sitting at the DMV. I find myself with two recurring resolutions every year: 1) to not make recurring resolutions and 2) to not make my resolutions until two weeks into the New Year.

In all seriousness, I, like many others I am sure, am horrible at keeping New Year’s Resolutions. Because of this, I am also horrible at coming up with New Year’s Resolutions. Here are some of this year’s contenders that eventually made their way into my trash can – because I knew that I would never be able to keep them.
