City gives and receives grants

The City Council gave $158,650 to a variety of human service organizations at its Dec. 16 meeting.

Sammamish received 32 requests for funding in the 2009-2010 timeframe, and the council gave the thumbs up on 30 of them.Among the organizations that will benefit from the grants are the Lake Washington Schools Foundation ($3,000) and the Providence Marianwood Foundation ($10,000). The schools foundation fundraises for education programs in the Lake Washington School District and Providence Marianwood does the same for an assisted-living facility in Issaquah, off of 228th Avenue Southeast.

The highest grant amount for any recipient was $10,000 — there were seven grants of this size awarded for the biennium — and the lowest grant amount was $1,000 — given to the Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery.

The Human Service Grant Committee chose not to give money to two organizations: Alliance for People with Disabilities and TeenHOPE. The first provides teens with disabilities with club activities that assist in the transition from high school into the community. The second targets homeless and at-risk youth and the need for crisis services in their community. Both organizations are in Shoreline and did not receive funding because the committee didn’t believe residents in Sammamish were likely to travel the 28 miles between the two cities.

The council also gave the nod to accepting grant money. The Local Hazardous Waste Management Grant Program will provide $14,050.75 to the city, which supports the city’s three residential recycling collection events, its one business collection event and its ongoing rain barrel distribution program. The city’s 2009 recycling program will use $82,434 in grant money from three separate sources.
