City Council to discuss reduced parkway project Dec. 15

The City Council will review a proposal to reduce the size of the East Lake Sammamish Parkway project’s first phase, according to Mayor Lee Fellinge.

The city’s 2009-2010 budget included $13.5 million for the first phase of the project. The money would go toward transforming a little more than one mile of the parkway from Inglewood Hill Road to Northeast 26th Street by adding left-turn lanes, bicycle lanes, medians and sidewalks.

The council has changed a study session slated for Dec. 15 to a study session and special meeting.

In general, switching a study session to a special meeting is significant in that it allows the City Council to take action, usually in the form of a vote, City Clerk Melonie Anderson said.

At the very least, the change alerts the public to a modification in topics for discussion in the Dec. 16 meeting, Fellinge said.

While other items will be discussed at the study session, the only agenda item for the special meeting portion of the Dec. 15 meeting is the East Lake Sammamish Parkway project.

Fellinge said that discussion would focus on a new proposal of his that reduces the scope of the East Lake Sammamish Parkway project, at least in its first phase.

At the Dec. 2 council meeting, several council members deferred discussions about the parkway project — as it related to passing the 2009-2010 budget — because a Dec. 16 meeting would allow for further discussion about contract proposals.

The council would still address contract proposals for the parkway project Dec. 16, but they could be affected by discussions in the Dec. 15 meeting, Fellinge said.
