Merchants support you,

now support them

There are too many empty storefronts popping up around Sammamish, but you have the power to help keep others from becoming vacant. All you have to do is shop right here in your hometown.

Your local merchants are the ones who bring music to the streets, plant their flowerboxes, call you by name when you come in, make special orders, hire Sammamish residents, donate to school fundraisers, sponsor youth sports teams and community events, and pay local taxes to support our city services and parks.

Of course, they also make our city more inviting by providing the goods and services we want, when we want it. And a quality community helps maintain home values.

The benefits of shopping locally are something we all know about, but with a slow economy, the facts become punctuated — starting with the vacant storefronts.

Our small businesses and local merchants are feeling the squeeze just as much as the big box chain stores. It’s tough running a business this year, no matter whether you are selling Christmas gifts or groceries. But they don’t need your pity, just your business.

Give a little extra thought to where you shop this holiday. Remember to support your local merchants when you can, so they are still open for business well into the new year.

SAMMI deadline tonight

Tonight is your last chance to submit nominations for the SAMMI awards. Remember the neighbors who go above and beyond? Remember the teacher who changed your child’s life? Remember the youth who seems to understand more about community service than most adults?

Now is the chance to recognize them for their efforts. Last year’s SAMMI awards saw a record number of nominations, and we’re sure that the people of Sammamish have done kept doing extraordinary things for the community.

So, log on to www.sammiawards.org, and give some credit to someone who deserves it.
