Fall sports here are incredible!

Maybe there’s something about leaves changing colors or the cold morning mist that blows in off the lake that makes Sammamish explode with athletic prowess in the fall.

A year ago, the plateau saw state champs from both high schools in football, soccer and swimming. If there’s been a change this year, it’s that the number of sports and schools winning looks to be expanding.

Eastlake’s girls’ cross country team topped the state two weeks ago and last week earned a spot at a national meet.

Swimmers Andie Taylor of Skyline and Katie Kinnear of Eastlake, after both swimming in the Olympic trials earlier this year, each won a state title. Kinnear, a freshman and Taylor, a junior, are both All-Americans – among the top 130 athletes in the country. Skyline’s soccer team is in the hunt for a state title and could be crowned this weekend.

Eastside Catholic’s football team apparently just needed a home field. The Crusaders in their first season in Sammamish won their conference and, after some last-second heroics this weekend, look well positioned to go deep into the playoffs.

Skyline football, consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally and the defending state champs, continues to roll over all comers. The Spartans have won 25 straight games over two seasons.

We are amazed by the breadth and depth of the athletic talent in Sammamish. Sure, a superstar athlete can rise from an area of about 40,000 people. But the number here must be anomalous.

Or maybe its not. The consistent quality of the teams is a testament to great coaching, and  to the support of the school community, always willing to pitch in with time or money to improve facilities and equipment for its students.

To those athletes who have already won a title, and to those who strove mightily and had their season end early, we congratulate you on your efforts. The lessons you’ve learned on the field (or in the pool, or on the course) will serve you all of your life.

To the athletes still out there, practicing and playing, good luck.

You are all part of a special time and place. We’re enjoying it as much as you!
