Good neighbors make good fences

The Eastlake Little League unveiled a new temporary fencing system at the Inglewood Junior High softball field Oct. 28. The fencing unit was installed just before the final home game of the season for the Inglewood junior varsity softball team, said Eastlake Little League softball vice president Steve Pollis.

“This is a really great contribution to the school and community because those fields are used so much by kids of all ages,” he said about the benefit to the school teams and league teams, who use the field as well.

Previously, the field had no fence and little league officials would set up a flimsy fence only for the little league season.

Now, players or coaches can set it up and take it down quickly, so it will not interfere with other activities, such as PE classes, that happen on the field during school hours.

The fence spans the outfield at about the 190-foot mark from home plate and helps give the players a sense of playing on a complete field, rather than the field being open all the way to the parking lot, Pollis said.

The idea for installing a new fence at the school came after Pollis and league organizers realized they could improve the quality of the field with the league’s own resources.

“We have all these assets for little league and … half the kids in that (school) program are in the little league program,” he said.

“We get to use their softball field, so it’s really a give-give situation. We thought, ‘lets make it good for everybody.’”

The effort brought the league and Lake Washington School District together, Pollis said.

The district acted quickly and had paperwork and such done within four weeks.

Pollis said it took just 10 helpers only three hours to drill 36 post holes 14 inches deep and install the fence.

Registration for the Eastlake Little League began Nov. 1.

This is a great example of cooperation between the community and the school district. Special thanks to Steve for bringing the energy and the initiative to get this job done quickly.

Improving our sports facilities is good for kids, families and the community and it helps us develop truly great sports programs for our kids.
