When children at the Spirit of Peace United Church of Christ heard that the shelves at the Issaquah Food Bank were low, they wanted to do something about it.

“It was the kids’ idea, completely,” said Suzi Mohn, a member of the church.

The church had heard of a larger congregation in the area that had collected 2,000 pounds of food, and were inspired to try and see how much they could collect.“We thought, let’s see what we can do,” said Mohn.

The group of eight-10 Sunday school children decided they would collect their weight in food, Mohn said, and they weighed in at 659.5 pounds.

They’ve been collecting food for the past couple weeks, and even asked for donations of canned goods while they were trick-or-treating, Mohn said.

Church members were excited when they more than doubled their goal. On Nov. 2, the final tally was 1,652.5 pounds.

Mohn said it took three truck trips to get it all to the food bank.

The socially progressive church meets at 9:30 on Sundays in the Pine Lake Community Center. For more information, visit www.spiritofpeaceucc.org.
