Dozens of community service and advocacy organizations around King County got an influx of helpers for a day last week.
The sudden swell in volunteer help came from more than 600 students and teachers from Eastside Catholic High School, who participated in the 5th annual Peace and Justice Day of Service Friday. Read more

Kamya Bijawat, 12, of Sammamish, had only written for a competition once before last Thursday. This was her first time reading her work in front of strangers at the Story Slam, held at the Sammamish Library.
She had entered the Reflections contest at her school, Redmond Junior High, and had not thought much of entering another young-writer competition.

Spirit of Peace United Church of Christ preschoolers and young children have kicked off “Worth your Weight in Food” — a food drive for the Issaquah Food Bank. They are collecting food donations equal to their combined weight of 659.5 pounds.
Donations will be accepted between 9 a.m. and noon (before, during and after worship) Nov. 2 at the Pine Lake Community Center at 21333 SE 20th St., Sammamish.
