Police Chief Brad Thompson could make a job change later this year.
The University of Washington announced Oct. 2 that it had three finalists for a position as chief of the university’s police department, including Thompson.
“I’m trying not to make a big deal out of it,” Thompson said. “I’ve been down this road before. I would hate to be excited about something that’s not going to happen.”
The job would be a “natural progression,” according to Thompson, who has worked for the county sheriff’s office for 30 years, and has been the police chief of Sammamish for two. If he dos not get the position, Thompson said he would not be applying for other positions in the foreseeable future.
“I am happy where I’m at in the city of Sammamish. They’ve treated me very well here,” Thompson said.
Ray Wittmier, Interim Police Chief at the University of Washington, said he thought Thompson had an advantage as a candidate because he was familiar with state law and with other enforcement officers around the county.
The other two candidates both hail from out-of-state. Neither Thompson nor Wittmier said they knew when the position would be filled.
Thompson was also a finalist for the police chief positions in Issaquah last year and Lakewood in February.
