City to celebrate August 28
Sammamish will celebrate its ninth birthday on Aug. 28 with a free concert from the Sammamish Symphony.
The annual event on the Sammamish Commons will feature non-profit groups running children’s activities, and popular games like a bean-bag toss, said Lynne Handlos, recreation coordinator for Sammamish.
The event is part of the city’s summer concert series, but is being moved to the commons for the last concert of the summer.
The same food vendors who serve Pine Lake Park each week during the summer concert series will come to City Hall, Handlos said.
And, of course, there will be birthday cake.
The headliner for the evening will be the Sammamish Symphony, which will play “A Salute to Broadway,” a medley of Broadway hits.
“It’s a collection of Broadway tunes,” said R. Joseph Scott, conductor of the Sammamish Symphony.
The arrangements are specifically for an orchestra, Scott said, and feature songs from well-known musicals such as “Oklahoma!” and “Gypsy.”
Scott said the symphony performs outside a few times a year, a situation which can be challenging, since sometimes musicians can’t hear the other instruments.
“It makes the orchestra ensemble more aware of each other,” Scott said.
However, the outside concerts are often better attended, and draw a more child-friendly audience.
The cake cutting birthday ceremony is set for 6 p.m. with the concert planned for 6:30-8 p.m. Parking is available at Mary, Queen of Peace and Sammamish Hills Lutheran Church.
