The Municipal League of King County has rated local candidates in the 5th and 45th legislative districts, offering some challengers a higher approval rating than current representatives.

The league, a non-partisan government watchdog organization, gave Rep. Roger Goodman (D-45) a “good” rating while calling Republican challenger Toby Nixon “outstanding.”

The league defines good candidates as those who have been active and effective in many roles and strong problem solvers with a satisfactory commitment to tackling issues.

Outstanding candidates are defined as having made skillful contributions and brought knowledge and creativity to legislative issues.

The league rated Rep. Larry Springer (D-45) “outstanding” and Republican challenger Kevin Haistings “good.”

In the 5th District, the league rated Republication State Sen. Cheryl Pflug “very good,” indicating that she has made significant contributions, has helped to build consensus in the legislature, is thorough and attentive to issues and inspires confidence in her service. Democratic challenger Phyllis Huster received the same rating.

The league rated Rep. Jay Rodne (R-5) “very good,” and democratic challenger Jon Viebrock “adequate,” which indicates that he has a record of participation and interest and is effective on some issues but has questionable suitability for office.

The league rated State Sen. Glenn Anderson (R-5) “good” and democratic challenger David Spring “very good.”

Sixty King County citizens generated the ratings by working as volunteers to study the public record, review candidates’ questionnaires, check references and interview candidates. The league’s trustees also reviewed the ratings.

The league rated more than 85 candidates in 40 legislative and judicial races based on knowledge, involvement, effectiveness and character. They rated all candidates, regardless of their desire to participate in the review.
