Tournament raises funds for Junior Achievement

This week, philanthropy once again calls upon would-be golfers to raise money for a good cause.
The 17th Annual Junior Achievement Evergreen Bank Golf Classic and Auction will take place at Sahalee Country Club June 23.

But before brandishing your clubs, know that the entry for a single player is $940, and $3,750 for a complete foursome. But according to Matt Kirk, Junior Achievement’s special events coordinator, there is still room for interested parties.

“I’d encourage anyone to inquire,” Kirk said.

Junior Achievement is an international nonprofit organization that offers educational programs to schools to enhance students’ business skills, preparing them for the workforce. Junior Achievement has offices in Spokane, the Tri-cities and Seattle, and a third location called J.A. World in Auburn, Kirk said.

J.A. World – Junior Achievement World – is like Disney Land, the business edition. On school field trips, children must role play, pretending they are adults with families to consider. They open bank accounts, buy cars, and live a day in a fake, miniature city. Typical of Junior Achievement programs, J.A. World develops students’ business skills through hands-on, experiential training, according to Kirk.

The Annual Golf Classic at Sahalee helps pay for the cost of materials, employee training and traveling across the state, Kirk said.

The event raised $215,000 last year, which Junior Achievement hopes to exceed this time, according to Kirk. Last year’s event had about 128 participants, making about 32 foursomes. In the past, the event has reserved all three sets of nine holes at the club, though last year the tournament only needed two, Kirk said.

In addition to the golf tournament, the event will also offer personalized instruction for those less accustomed to using a driver and a pitching wedge. Jim Pike, head golf instructor at Sahalee, will teach participants stroke mechanics, putting and chipping. The clinic will cost $150, beginning at 2 p.m.

Lastly, there is a cocktail reception, followed by a dinner and silent auction – it costs $75 to attend the auction.

The classic starts at 10 a.m. For more information, visit www.jawashington.org, or call 206-969-2616.
